Cybersecurity Literacy as a Human Right

Promoting universal access to cybersecurity knowledge for a safer digital society.

Warsaw, Poland - September 23, 2025

Why security knowledge should be considered a basic right in the digital age

In today's world, digital systems govern access to healthcare, finance, education, and civic participation. Without basic cybersecurity literacy, individuals and communities are excluded from these opportunities or left vulnerable to exploitation. Treating cybersecurity literacy as a human right ensures that everyone has the means to protect themselves and participate safely in the digital era.

Not The Hidden Wiki (NTHW) champions this principle by providing free, accessible educational resources. NTHW removes paywalls and institutional barriers to enable anyone with an internet connection to learn how to defend against phishing, secure devices, and protect personal data. Access to security knowledge becomes a matter of equity, not privilege.

CypSec reinforces this mission by embedding literacy into its enterprise and government platforms. Training modules, awareness campaigns, and open-source guides are distributed directly through CypSec solutions, ensuring that employees and citizens alike can build essential skills without additional cost or dependency on commercial providers.

The digital divide is no longer just about access to devices or connectivity: it is also about the ability to use them safely. Communities lacking cybersecurity knowledge are disproportionately targeted by scams, ransomware, and misinformation. Closing this gap is as critical as closing gaps in reading or financial literacy.

"Cybersecurity knowledge is not a luxury. It is a necessity. Recognizing it as a human right ensures no one is left defenseless in the digital world," said Frederick Roth, Chief Information Security Officer at CypSec.

International organizations increasingly recognize digital rights as human rights. Cybersecurity literacy naturally fits within this framework, as it underpins the ability to exercise privacy, free expression, and access to information. Without literacy, these rights are hollow in practice.

Through partnerships with nonprofits like NTHW, CypSec helps communities to create inclusive programs that prioritize literacy for all. This includes school curricula, workplace training, and public awareness campaigns. CypSec's primary objective is to transform security knowledge into a shared social good.

CypSec strongly believes that, as societies become more interconnected, individual failures can cascade into systemic risks. Ensuring universal literacy is therefore not only a matter of fairness but also a matter of collective resilience.

Treating cybersecurity literacy as a human right sets a foundation for safer, more inclusive digital societies. Knowledge empowers individuals, strengthens communities, and creates a global environment where security is shared rather than imposed.
